James was the Design Manager during the preliminary and detailed design phase for the M1 Upgrade North - Sports Drive to Gateway Motorway.
James led the design development to improve 2.6 km's of the Pacific Motorway northbound carriageway between Sports Drive and the Gateway Motorway. A key feature of the design included an off road shared path adjacent to the motorway, connecting the V1 Veloway at Eight Mile Plains to Springwood.
The existing V1 Veloway terminated at the Gateway Motorway (M2) and Logan Road interchange. Extending the existing V1 was challenging as the alignment of the new shared path needed to thread between the widened motorway and a mapped fish passage within a constrained transport corridor.
Additional land acquisitions were avoided and impacts to the fish passage minimised by cantilevering the shared path above the waterway. Circular columns were also required to support the shared path and withstand anticipated high velocities during frequent rain events. Forming a unique solution for the existing active transport network.
Extending the V1 encourages mobility by increasing accessibility to high quality active transport infrastructure and integrating with the wider transport network.
